The numbers on this page come from the inputs you enter and the method stated: 3,600 seconds to an hour, 52 weeks to a year, twelve months to a year, and nothing else. No industry shrinkage figure, no occupancy benchmark and no assumption about your attrition; every one of those is yours to enter.

Performance compensation management is the operational half of paying for performance: the budget, the matrix, the exceptions, the approvals and the audit trail that turn a set of ratings into a payroll change. Where the pairing of the two cycles is a design question, this is a run question, and it fails in run-shaped ways. Spreadsheets emailed between managers, an approval nobody can find, a total that moved after it was signed off, and a payroll cut-off that arrives before the last approval does.

Freeze the inputs and date the freeze

Headcount, current salaries, ratings and the budget all move. Take them as at a named date, write that date on the round, and work from the frozen set. Every reconciliation problem later is somebody having used a number from a different day.

Give every exception an owner and a reason

Off-matrix increases are normal; unexplained ones are a liability. Capture who asked, who approved and why, at the moment it happens, because reconstructing it at the end of the round is both slow and unconvincing.

Work backwards from the payroll cut-off

The deadline is not the announcement, it is the date payroll needs the file. Count back through approvals, calibration and the manager input window, and you usually find the round has to open weeks earlier than anybody planned.

Reconcile twice, before and after

Once against the budget before approvals go out, once against payroll after they land. The second reconciliation is the one that catches a manager who edited a figure after sign-off, and it takes minutes if the frozen set was dated.

Performance compensation management: common questions

How much of this can be a spreadsheet? All of it, for a small team, as long as one person owns the file and the freeze date is real. It stops working at the point where several managers edit at once, which is usually somewhere around fifty people.

What has to be kept afterwards? The frozen inputs, the matrix as applied, every exception with its reason and approver, and the final file sent to payroll. That set answers essentially every question asked later.

Does Orgplanly run the payroll change? No. It keeps the roles, the plan and the record the round is worked from, and the payroll change is made in payroll.

Keeping what you make

The worksheet answered today's question. Pro keeps the answer: the plan you just worked saved against the team it belongs to, re-opened at the next review instead of rebuilt, branded and exported for the budget meeting.

  • Download the finished checklist or intake form as a file the client accepts
  • The paperwork goes out clean, without the Kickoffo watermark
  • Re-use the checklist for the next client instead of rebuilding it
  • Your firm's logo on every checklist and form you send
  • Export every client's onboarding at once when the account review or the buyer asks
  • Send the plan for review from the record, not a spreadsheet
