Performance management training for managers is the part of a cycle rollout that decides whether the cycle produces anything useful. The process can be well designed and the software can be fine, and if twenty managers interpret the rating scale twenty ways the output is noise that somebody will nonetheless attach pay to. This page is about what that training has to cover, how long it takes and how to tell afterwards whether it worked, written for the person rolling the cycle out rather than for a training provider.

Teach the scale before the software
Most of the variance between managers is in what a rating means, not in where to click. Work real anonymised examples until the room converges on the same rating for the same evidence, because that convergence is the whole point and no tour of a form produces it.
Rehearse the hard conversation, not the easy one
Every manager can deliver a good review. The training has to cover the average rating that the person thinks is unfair, the improvement conversation and the gap nobody has previously mentioned, because those are the ones that get avoided or handled badly.
Give them the timetable and the time
Managers who discover in week one that the cycle needs six hours they do not have will do it badly or late. Publish the dates, state the hours per report and make the case to whoever owns their capacity, as part of the training rather than after it.
Read the output to see whether it took
Rating distributions by manager, completion dates and the share of reviews with written reasoning tell you which managers need a second session. This is the measurement that turns training from an event into something you can improve.

Performance management training for managers: common questions
How long does this training need to be? Half a day covers the scale, the calibration exercise and one rehearsed hard conversation for most teams. An hour covers the software and changes nothing about the quality of the ratings.
Who should run it? Whoever owns the cycle, with the managers' own examples. A generic course teaches a generic scale, and the scale is the thing that has to be shared in this particular organization.
Do new managers need it separately? Yes, and the cheapest way is to fold it into the first cycle they run, with their own reports as the material and a second pair of eyes on the first set of ratings.
