Financial wellness is the wellbeing category with the clearest employee demand and the murkiest supplier economics. Money worry is consistently among the things employees say affects them most at work, so the demand is real. What is sold against it ranges from a content library to regulated advice to a short-term credit product, and those have very different risk profiles for an employer. This page separates what is in the bundle and gives the test that decides whether the fee is earned.
What is usually in the bundle
Education and content. Budgeting and planning tools. A route to a human, which may be coaching or may be regulated advice. Sometimes access to products: a savings mechanism, a debt consolidation route, or earned wage access, which lets somebody draw pay before payday. The first three are broadly what they appear to be. The fourth is where an employer needs to read carefully, because a product is being sold to your employees through a channel you provided.
How the supplier is paid, which is the question to ask first
Some are paid only by you, per head per year. Some are paid partly by the products they distribute, which means the incentive is to distribute them. Some earned wage access products are free to the employer and charge the employee per draw. All three are legitimate and they are not the same arrangement, and an employer that does not know which it has cannot answer a question about it later. Ask, and ask for the figure.
Earned wage access deserves its own paragraph
Drawing earned pay early solves a real cash-flow problem and it has a cost, and where the cost falls on the employee per draw it can become a recurring expense for the people who can least afford one. This site publishes no legal or financial advice. What it will say is that offering it is a decision with a distributional consequence, that the per-draw cost and the repeat-use pattern are the two things to ask about, and that the answer should be in writing.
The single test
Ask what share of employees will use the thing you are actually paying for, and then divide the annual fee by that number. Financial wellness content has famously low engagement; a route to a human has modest use and high value per use; a product has whatever use its economics drive. A platform priced per head and used by a twentieth of the workforce has a cost per user twenty times its headline, and that is the figure to take to renewal.
Questions people ask about financial wellness platform
Is financial wellness worth budgeting for?
The demand is real, more so than most wellbeing categories, because money worry is consistently among the things employees report affecting them at work. Whether a particular platform is worth it depends on cost per actual user, which is usually many times the per-head headline.
What should we ask a supplier first?
How they are paid: by you, by the products they distribute, or by the employee per transaction. All three exist, they create different incentives, and an employer that does not know which arrangement it has cannot answer for it.
Should we offer earned wage access?
It solves a genuine cash-flow problem and it has a cost, and where that cost falls on the employee per draw it can become recurring for the people least able to absorb it. This site gives no financial or legal advice; the two things to establish in writing are the per-draw cost and the repeat-use pattern.
Does the platform give advice?
Sometimes, and that word has a specific meaning with rules attached. Establish whether what is offered is education, coaching or regulated advice, and who is authorized to give it, before it is put in front of your people.
