Are employee surveys effective? They can be, and most are not, and the difference is not the questionnaire. A survey is effective when its results are read per team rather than as one average, when they are reported back to the people who answered, and when one visible action follows before the next survey. Programmes fail at the third condition, because the actions live in a meeting note nobody reopens. The free worksheets on this site are built around the three conditions.
Condition one: read per team
A company-wide score hides the team where the answer is no, and that team is the finding. The eNPS worksheet counts promoters, passives and detractors per team from the results you enter and shows the arithmetic, so the spread between teams is visible and a manager has a number of their own. An effective survey is a set of team numbers, not one company number.
Condition two: report back
People answer the next survey if they heard what happened to the last one. Reporting the team's figure back to the team, quickly, is the condition most often skipped because the results sat in a deck for two months. The worksheet works the figures within the hour, and the plan records the cadence so the report-back has a date.
Condition three: act, visibly, before asking again
One action per team with an owner and a date, kept on the record and reopened at the next cycle so the team sees it was done. The largest employee survey in the United States, the Federal Employee Viewpoint Survey, is followed by published action plans for the same reason: a survey with no visible action lowers the engagement it measured. On Orgplanly the actions are records on the org plan beside the results.
Questions people ask about are employee surveys effective
Are employee surveys effective for small companies?
Yes, if the three conditions are met, and they are easier to meet at forty people than at four thousand.
Why do most surveys fail?
No visible action between cycles. The record of dated actions is the fix.
Are the worksheets free?
Yes. Orgplanly Pro keeps the cycles and actions as records.
